Kenya reported its first-ever Ebola death on Tuesday, according to the country's health minister. The patient was a citizen who arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday. The health ministry identified 28 contacts of the deceased for monitoring and follow-up.

The death marks the first recorded Ebola case in Kenya and comes as the virus spreads rapidly through the north-east of the DRC. The outbreak in the DRC began in May and is the 17th such outbreak recorded in that country.

The strain circulating in the DRC is Bundibugyo, for which there is no vaccine or specific treatment available. As of October 2, the DRC outbreak had killed 4,082 people out of 8,463 confirmed cases in the country.

The cross-border transmission to Kenya underscores the regional risk posed by the ongoing outbreak in the DRC. Kenya shares a border with the DRC and has significant population movement between the two countries, creating pathways for disease spread. The identification of 28 contacts in Kenya signals authorities are moving to trace and isolate potential cases to prevent further transmission.
