A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck southern Panama on Friday, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake occurred at a depth of 12.6 kilometers with its epicenter in a sparsely populated area approximately 200 kilometers from Panama City. It lasted about one minute.
The earthquake caused buildings and roads to collapse and sent thousands of people into the streets. However, Panama appeared to escape widespread destruction or deaths, according to available reports.
