A magnitude-7 earthquake struck Nagqu, a city in northern Tibet, killing at least 16 people and injuring 54, according to official Chinese media. The quake destroyed at least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds in the region, prompting ongoing search and rescue operations.

China's national broadcaster CCTV reported this was the largest earthquake to hit Tibet in the past five years. At least seven aftershocks followed the main tremor, according to the Nagqu media office, which cited city government officials in its damage assessment.

The scale of structural damage extended beyond residential buildings. The collapse of livestock sheds alongside homes suggests the quake affected both urban and rural areas of Nagqu. Search and rescue teams deployed after the initial quake to locate survivors among the rubble.

The Guardian reported these figures on October 23.
