Typhoon Champi swept across Taiwan on Saturday, killing one person and injuring more than 500, according to The Guardian. The storm uprooted trees, severed power lines and forced the closure of large sections of Taiwan, including the capital Taipei. Flights across the island were cancelled.
Taiwan's Central Weather Administration reported that Champi retained gusts near 126 kilometres per hour (78 miles per hour) at its centre as it weakened and moved northward toward the Chinese coast. Earlier in its path, the storm had been classified as a super typhoon and ranked among the strongest Pacific storms this year.
Large parts of Taiwan remained mostly closed as the system passed through the region.
