Heavy rain and strong winds continue to affect south-eastern Europe and Turkey this week, with authorities issuing severe rainfall and flood warnings. A low pressure system has generated powerful thunderstorms across the region. Central Greece and western Turkey face 100-150mm of rain, with some areas seeing higher totals.
Turkey experienced a fatal tornado on Tuesday during an intense thunderstorm in Antalya, a coastal city in the south-west. Four construction workers died in that storm.
Cyclone Arnab made landfall in India, affecting the regions of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Wind gusts exceeded 85mph, and rainfall totals in some areas topped 200mm. More than 180,000 people were evacuated, and widespread disruption struck energy and transport infrastructure. The cyclone will weaken as it moves northward but will continue delivering heavy rain to northern and central India.
